All Veterinary Technicians are awesome, but many technicians have different skill sets and technical ability. Roo's Tech Tiers help us highlight your skills to the hospitals we work with.
During your orientation process, we'll place you in the tier that's right for you. We do our best to get this right by reviewing your resume, any references you provide, and speaking with you during your activation call.
You can advance to a higher tier by acquiring the required skills and experience, then completing a tier assessment request form following the guidelines outlined below.
What are Roo’s Tech Tiers?
Tier 1 Techs include Veterinary Assistants and newer Technicians while Tier 4 Techs are Specialty/ER Technicians with highly-specialized skill sets and experience.
You must be able to confidently perform ALL skills required at the higher tier to advance.
Here are the skills required at each level in most states:
*NOTE: Tiers are different in California and Ohio. You’ll find those tier skills checklists below.
How do I increase my Tech Tier?
Eligibility Requirements
To apply for a Tech Tier increase, you must first meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Account Tenure: Maintain an active account on Roo for at least 1 year.
-
Account Standing:
- Your account must be in good standing with no active disciplinary actions or unresolved issues.
- No cancellations or disciplinary actions in the last 30 days.
- Reliability Rating: Have a minimum 95% reliability rating. You can see your reliability rating on the Reviews tab of your Tech Profile.
-
Shift Minimums: Complete a minimum number of Roo relief shifts based on the tier you’re applying for:
- To request Tier 2: Must have completed 10 shifts.
- To request Tier 3: Must have completed 20 shifts.
- To request Tier 4: Must have completed 30 shifts including 15 ER or specialty shifts.
Assessment Requirements
To apply for a tier increase, you must provide:
- Updated resume reflecting current skills, certifications, and experience at the time of request.
- Two (2) DVM References
Both DVM references must come from a practicing Veterinarian who can speak directly to your proficiency with the skills required at the higher tier.
You are responsible for ensuring your references are prepared to provide written feedback within 1 week. We reach out to all references via email and will make one attempt in most cases.
IMPORTANT: Please be sure you meet all of the above eligibility requirements and your assessment request form is complete before applying. If you're found ineligible, you will have to wait 90 days before your tier assessment will be considered again.
Approval Process
- A Roo Tech Coordinator will review your tier assessment request within 10 business days.
- Once we confirm you’ve met all the eligibility requirements, a tier assessment call will be scheduled with your assigned Tech Coordinator.
- On this call, we may ask clarifying questions or expand on answers given by your references. We’ll make our final determination on the call and process your tier increase within 24 hours.
The determination for Tech Tier advancement will be based on your assessment call, references, and resume. The final decision is at the discretion of the Tech Coordinator assigned to your assessment.
This is something we take very seriously and want to make sure we get right. Please help us by providing accurate information and ensuring your assessment is complete with all eligibility requirements met.
We’re rooting for you and want to support you in this process. Check out our blog article, Level Up Tech Tiers, for more specific guidance on how you can acquire new skills and successfully make the leap to a higher Roo Tech Tier.
