CA - How are taxes handled?

🇨🇦 This article applies only to hospitals using Roo in Canada.

Roo itemizes the costs associated with each shift when you post it and on your invoice.

What you will see

Your cost breakdown will include:

  • Vet or RVT shift compensation
  • Roo's service fee
  • Applicable GST/HST on Roo's service fee
  • Your total cost

The same breakdown will appear on the Shift Confirmation page before you post a shift and on your Roo invoice, so you can clearly understand the total amount.

How is GST/HST calculated?

Roo is required to collect applicable GST/HST on our service fee in Canada. GST/HST is calculated only on Roo's service fee, not on the Vet or RVT's shift compensation.

The applicable tax rate depends on your province. The amount shown when you post the shift and the amount on your invoice will reflect the appropriate regional rate.

This does not change the Vet or RVT's shift compensation or increase Roo's service fee. It changes how these costs are displayed so you can see the full breakdown.

Why might I receive a separate invoice from a Vet or RVT?

Canadian Vets and RVTs are independent contractors. A GST/HST-registered Vet or RVT may be required to collect tax on their shift compensation and invoice your hospital directly once they pass a CA$30,000 total annual threshold.

A provider-issued tax invoice is separate from your Roo invoice and is not a duplicate Roo charge:

  • Roo collects applicable GST/HST on Roo's service fee.
  • The Vet or RVT may separately collect applicable GST/HST on their shift compensation.

When available, the Vet or RVT's CRA GST/HST number will also appear on your Roo invoice.

Example

For a shift with CA$1,000 in Vet or RVT compensation and a CA$50 Roo service fee in Ontario:

Line itemAmount
Vet or RVT shift compensationCA$1,000.00
Roo's service feeCA$210.00
Ontario HST on Roo's service fee at 13%CA$27.30
Total Roo invoiceCA$1,237.30

If the Vet or RVT is required to collect GST/HST, they may separately invoice your hospital for tax on the CA$1,000 in shift compensation.
