How to add and manage backup shifts (Veterinarian)

Backup shifts

Backup shifts make it easy for you to have another opportunity to find work if your original request falls through for that day. If a backup shift is added, Roo will automatically request it on your behalf if your original request expires or gets declined. We’ll let you know when its requested or if anything changes so you’re always in the loop!

How to add a backup shift

Step 1: After submitting a shift request, you should see a section on the shift card that shows you the option to add a backup shift. Click “View backup shifts” to see backup shifts for that day.

Step 2: Select a backup shift from the options provided. These shifts will be available from nearby hospitals for the same date as your original shift request.

Step 3: Click “Add as backup” if you’d like to add the shift as your backup option. If your original shift request falls through, this selection will be auto-requested for you. You can also propose new shift details for the backup shift if enabled by the hospital.

You can add one backup shift with every shift request you submit!

How to remove and manage backup shifts

  • To view your backup shifts, navigate to your Schedule page and click on any of your active shift requests. If you have a backup shift added with that shift request, it will appear within the shift card of the shift request. If you don’t have a backup shift added, you can click “View backup shifts” to view and add.
  • To remove a backup shift, click into your shift request for that day to view the backup shift. Click the three dots next to the backup shift, and select “Remove backup”.

  • When viewing your backup shift, you can also click “View backups”. From there, you can view all backup options again, and even replace your existing backup with another if you’d like.

Important things to know

  • You can only add one backup shift per shift request at this time. You can request up to three shifts per day!
  • Backup shift options are for the same date as your original request. If we can’t find any similar shifts to your original, you may not see the option to add a backup with that request.
  • Your backup will never pay less than your original request. Backup shifts should be shown to you at the same payout or higher. If the hospital allows it, you can propose a different rate or time, just like you can with your original request.
  • You'll be notified any time your backup shift's status changes, whether it's requested, confirmed, or if shift details like pay or time change so you can stay in control.

Best practices

To get the most out of backup shifts, keep these tips in mind:

  • Pick a backup that actually works for you. Since it could become your real shift, weigh the pay, distance, and timing just like you would with any other request.
  • Check back on your backup shift before it's needed. Hospital details can change, so it's worth a quick look every so often to make sure it's still one you'd want if it ends up getting requested.
  • Remember you can swap it anytime. If a better option opens up, you can replace your backup shift instead of sticking with your first pick.
  • Add a backup shift every time you submit a request. It costs you nothing extra and gives you a second shot at working the day you wanted!
